There are many benefits from art therapy including changes in mood, thoughts and behaviours (CBT), being in the present, helping clients to change their perspective about the future, and allows the client to engage in creative thinking in a safe environment. Many types of art mediums are used including paint, pencil crayon, collage and sculpture to allow the client to approach art with a sense of curiosity and not being judgmental about the creations or ability of the artist. It’s a fun activity that doesn’t require any artistic skill or experience. The mission and focus are simple: to help individuals heal, energize and become aware of their inner strengths by providing a safe place to create. Common uses of art therapy include, but are not limited to, people under lots of stress or pressure, like managers, doctors, nurses, EMS, police and firefighters, or someone suffering from other symptoms from brain injuries, eating disorders, cancer, PTSD, depression, anxiety, or suffering from loss and grief. Anyone can use art therapy, and anyone who uses art therapy is capable of benefiting from it in some way. There are benefits from simply using the arts as a creative outlet in one’s life, regardless of whether you are seeing an art therapist although there are strong benefits from seeing a qualified art therapist.

Are you looking for a way to improve your mental and emotional well-being? Have you considered art therapy?

Art therapy is a type of therapy that uses creativity to help you resolve conflicts, develop interpersonal skills, manage behaviors, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness, and more. Engaging in an “artsperience” can help you cope with life’s challenges by combining art with the experience of being grounded and present.

I offer individual in-person sessions in my open concept studio office and online sessions for those who prefer to stay at home or are in the Northwestern Ontario region. I work with adolescents (12 and up), adults, and seniors using an eclectic style of treatment that borrows from CBT, DBT, Narrative therapy, and positive psychology, based on the client’s needs for that session.

You don’t have to be an artist to engage in art therapy. It’s about the process of creating and being in the present, and everyone can be an artist!

If you’re interested in learning more about art therapy, book an initial in-person 60-minute session or an online initial 60-minute session with me. Together, we can work towards improving your mental and emotional well-being.
